Description
The business interned at this fall is a commercial fishing business out of Whittier Alaska. I am turned on the fishing boat which is a singer called the Golden Pacific. The Golden Pacific is owned and captained by Nathan Tueller, my mentor. Singing is a type of fishing where are you encircle the fish in the net and then close the bottom to catch them. I spent two weeks working on the boat and during those two weeks, we caught over 500,000 pounds of pink salmon. while the net came on you have to do something called stacking which is where you stack all the corks in a neat pile so that they go off the back of the boat nicely the next time you said. This is a very important and also very difficult job to do on the boat. Another job I had on the boat was called plunging which is where you use a long metal plunger to keep the fish from swimming out of the open end of the net so that they don't escape. On average we worked 14 to 15 hours a day.
These videos will give you pretty good idea of how everything works
Golden Pacific
Projecket
My project was to mend the Nets on board so that no fish could Escape. this entailed basically a lot of sewing and had a pretty steep learning curve. there are a lot of very specific knots that you need to know how to tie it to men net properly and they can be a lot to remember at times. unfortunately, I don't have any pictures to show you of me mending net but it basically involves me Using a very large sewing needle full of twine to sew little holes in the Nets shut so that the salmon can't swim through them.
Reflection
A strength I discovered while working on the boat is that I have a hard work ethic. This allowed me to thrive in that environment as well as impress my mentor and the other crew on board.
An accomplishment I am proud of that I achieved during my internship is having nice organized Stacks by the end of My time on the boat. As you can imagine stacking a quarter-mile of net into nice neat piles is not a super easy task, but by the end of my time on the boat, I was able to do nice neat stacks.
The challenge I encountered on the boat was the same as my accomplishment cork stacking. it took me almost the entire two weeks I spent on the boat to get a good neat stack without having to have the net stopped so I could catch up stocking net is very physically demanding and can take quite a while to get good at.
An area of growth I discovered was communication. Onse or twice I had a hard time communicating with Nathan and the other deckhands. This obviously can lead to problems with efficiency as well as safety.
I really enjoyed my internship and it is definitely a career path I am interested in. I was already a commercial fisherman in Alaska but on a different boat doing a different type of fishing. as I said this is definitely a career I am interested in pursuing and planning on returning to the boat I usually work on in the summer this summer.
